Final Project
For my final project I am making a powerpoint presentation on the move The Boondock Saints and its characters. The movie itself is one of my favorites and after taking this class I can really see the different archetypes that are present in the movie. After describing the movie I will attemt to place the main characters with their own archetype and explain why they fit with the ones that they do. I will also add a movie to each slide to demonstrate the archetype.
Middlesex INtro
Jeffrey Eugenides’s novel Middlesex focuses on the chronicle of forty-one-year-old, hermaphroditic Calliope Stephanides, which presents her multigenerational Greek-American family and her struggle to establish a clear sense of self. After opening with the story of her grandparents, Desdemona and Lefty, and their subsequent union, Cal traces the damaged gene that this brother and sister passed down through the generations to Cal, which causes her irregular gender.
Queer Theory
Queer theory is a field of critical theory that emerged in the early 1990s out of the fields of gay and lesbian studies and feminist studies. It is a kind of hermeneutics devoted to queer readings of texts. Heavily influenced by the work of Michel Foucault, queer theory builds both upon feminist challenges to the idea that gender is part of the essential self and upon gay/lesbian studies’ close examination of the socially constructed nature of sexual acts and identities. Whereas gay/lesbian studies focused its inquiries into “natural” and “unnatural” behavior with respect to homosexual behavior, queer theory expands its focus to encompass any kind of sexual activity or identity that falls into perverted, normative and deviant categories

Return Threshold
The return to the threshold is the moment in the journey when the hero is finally able to return home. This task however may not be simple as the case is that the hero mmust face one last challenge. I sorta think of it as in terms of older video games. After you completed each level you thought that you would just go on to the next one. However, your character always must face a leader character or an evil boss who is usually alot stronger than any of the other character that you had to defeat. A good movie example occurs in Pearl Harbor with Ben Affleck (Rafe) and Josh Hartnett (Danny). Both friends survive the inital attack on Pearl Harbor but both accept a dangerous mission with Piolot Doolittle. They fly their planes over jJapan and drop bombs on factories, but their plane crash lands in Japanese territory. Sadly Danny is killed and Rafe must return home to raise rafe’s children with his girlfriend.
Rescue from Without
The rescue from without occurs near the end of the hero’s journey. At this point, the hero must rely on some unexpected source to either help or save them. An example from a move of this rescue woyld be in The Lord of the Rings franchise. Golum must help lead Frodo to Morador wher the Ring must be destroyed. Golum turns out to be less than Frodo expected bu nonetheless, he does assist Frodo. Another example is found in the movie The Wizard of Oz. In order to return home, Dorthy must reach the city of Oz and meet with its mayor. When he turns out to be unreliable, the Good Which helps her to go back to Kansas.
Magic Flight
The magic flight is the occurance in the monomyth when the hero is forced to flee, usually with some kind of help. At other times, and usually which is the case, the hero has reached his moment of enlightenment and is able to return home, many time embarking on another journey all to itself. Movies that I could think of in which a noticible “magic flight” moment take place are The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and Finding Nemo. In the final Lord of the Rings movie, after Frodo and Sam have destroyed the ring they are stranded on the burning slopes of Morador. Gandalph brings with him to large eagles to pick them up and carry them to safety. In Harry Potter, a phoenix carries Harry and his friends to the castle after they defeated the Basalisk. Again, the creature is literally flying the hero to safety. Finally, near the end of Finding Nemo, marlin and Dory eventually find Nemo. But, as they do, Dory is trapped in a fisherman’s net and she has to be saved.

My journey is almost nearly done
It’s amazing how far that I’ve come
Now there’s no looking back
I’m finished so in fact
I think I will now finish my rum.
